During Autumn Term 2, Year 4 learnt all about the Vikings!
In English, we further developed our grammar and punctuation knowledge by learning about relative clauses and speech. We used the silent animation clips from the ‘Morph’ series to write our own dialogue for the clips. It was great to finally give the silent characters voices!
Using our knowledge of speech, fronted adverbials and expanded noun phrases, we learnt to become authors by writing our own short stories. We first learnt about the structure of stories and how these sections build up the suspense and interest for the reader.
Our stories were about ‘Pingu’ and his friend who end up becoming trapped in an icy, gloomy cave after a fun, simple game. Here is an example of one of our stories.
We were very busy in Maths during Autumn 2. We learnt different skills to ensure we are fluent and then using our knowledge to explain and solve problems. We also problem solved a lot using addition and subtraction and 4 digit numbers. Sometimes, the numbers were tricky and we had to exchange and regroup using our place value grids and counters or a formal method.
Also, this half term, we learnt to multiply and divide numbers by 10 and 100 where our answers could become decimal numbers! We had to use our knowledge to prove different statements and calculations were true or false.
Mrs Hand taught us to play the recorder. We learnt different types of notation. We began to use music specific vocabulary such as crochets, quavers, minims, dynamics and tempo. We learnt to play the ‘a’ ‘b’ and ‘g’ notes. We are super excited to master different songs next half term.
We had our Viking workshop which was so much fun! As part of the day, we looked at different artefacts and used our detective skills to figure out what they were used for. After, we had the opportunity to try on Viking clothing and jewellery. Some of us even had a chance to hold Viking weapons (they were so heavy!). In the afternoon, we got to be quiz masters and ask all the burning questions we had to our experts. We also made our own Viking shields and then created a Viking war chant. Our teachers said we sounded like incredibly scary warriors!
